Can anyone recommend some good vegetarian restaurants in New York City?

I'm going to New York soon, and my friend and I are both vegetarians. We want to try a vegetarian restaurant while we are there because I'm sure there are more options there than in Michigan. I've been to the Life Cafe before and I know they have some vegetarian options, but I'm really looking for some vegetarian food only places. Thanks in advance!

  4. So many places. The Red Bamboo on west 4th street is one of my favorites.I don't care for their "pretend meat", but their regular vegetarian choices are really good.

If you are into Hummus , There is the Hummus Place in several locations. All vegetarian (not vegan, but vegan choices too.) I go to the one on St. Marks Place between 1st and A. http://www.hummusplace.com/ The best hummus and home made (whole wheat) pita ever! Great falafels and grape leaves too. The one on St. Marks is the one they used a lot in the latest Woodie Allen Movie "Whatever Works".

Almost every restaurant has vegetarian choices, so I do not limit my self to vegetarian restaurants. If you want to try something really special and have never had it, try Ethiopian food. There is a place on 10th ave. between 45th ans 46th called Queen of Sheba. The have a vegetarian sampler platter that is heaven! Ethiopian food is similar to Indian food but earthier and not quite as spicy if you never had it. http://www.shebanyc.com/Vegetarian.html (Don't worry. No fish in the vegetarian platter)

You might also enjoy the Galaxy Global Eatery on Irving Place in the village. They have vegetarian and non vegetarian menus http://galaxyglobaleatery.wordpress.com/ I highly recommend the Starlight Caesar Salad 9.95. It's huge!

    Romaine hearts, frisse, fried

    caper blossoms, cornmeal

    crusted tofu, avocado, lotus

    crostini & vegan hemp caesar

    dressing

Don't forget dessert. Try their Galaxy hempnut vanilla Ice cream or a Beggar’s Purse:

Deep fried wonton filled with Grand Marnier, chocolate granache & strawberries and hempnut vanilla ice cream New Yorker. Vegetarian.

  5. There are TONS!

For raw vegan, check out Bonobos, which is on 23rd Street near 5th Avenue. It's right across from Madison Square Park. It's a fairly simple lunch-type place. For upscale raw dining, check out Pure Food and Wine, which is on Irving Place between 17th and 18th. It's near Union Square. It's expensive, but it's really, really good. If you go, get the tasting menu.

I haven't been there often, but Candle Cafe (3rd Avenue and 75th Street) is nice. Skip the desserts, though. Their sister restaurant, Candle 79, is a few blocks away.

There's a place in the Village called Gobo; it's on 6th Avenue (a.k.a. Avenue of the Americas) and Waverly Place. They also have a location on the Upper East Side.

On 4th Street near 6th is Red Bamboo, but it's a tiny, tiny place. They're sort of a vegetarian "soul" food type place--you don't go there for healthy food, you go there for generous portions. They have desserts from Vegan Treats, which means they are awesome.

For diner-type food, check out Kate's Joint, which is on 4th Street and Avenue B.

There's a vegan apothecary called Lula's Sweet Apothecary a couple blocks away, on 6th Street between Avenues A and B.

And check out www.happycow.net for more.

For a bit of shopping, check out MooShoes, which is on 72 Orchard Street in the Lower East Side. They're an all-vegan shoe store. There's also an alternative bookstore, Bluestockings, on Allen Street just south of Houston (1st Avenue becomes Allen Street at Houston, which is pronounced HOWS-ton and not like the city in Texas).

Have fun! I travel to NYC occasionally.
