AT&T Resumes Online iPhone Sales in NYC

December 29th, 2009 at 8:02 AM - News by Jeff Gamet

Following the company's decision to halt online iPhone sales in the New York City area over the weekend, AT&T reversed itself and began offering Apple's combination iPod and smartphone through its Web site late on Monday, according to the New York Times.

AT&T initially told customers the iPhone wasn't available in the area because there weren't enough cell towers to handle the load, but later changed its tune to say the decision was driven by "increased fraudulent activity in that area when ordering the iPhone."

An AT&T spokesperson offered up a third reason by saying ""We periodically modify our promotions and distribution channels."

Despite AT&T's own Web site sales blackout, the iPhone was still available in its own retail stores, Apple Stores, and Apple's retail Web site.

AT&T isn't elaborating on the incident, and is sticking by its spokesperson's statement even after resuming online sales.

AT&T, NYC, and the Disappearing iPhone Mystery get ready to feel raving

NYC

Ladies and gentlemen, prepare yourselves: We have a new twist in the slow-news-day-driven mystery of the vanishing iPhone in the state of New York.

Let me get you up to speed, in case you've been busy eating fruitcake all weekend: AT&T, as the sharp-minded gumshoes at The Consumerist blog noticed on Sunday, briefly made iPhones unavailable for purchase throughout the state of New York. The issue affected only online sales; you could still walk into any store and pluck one from the shelves. You could also still buy one directly from the Apple Web site. But not from AT&T's Web site, gosh darn it.

The plot thickened when an online customer service rep apparently told The Consumerist's sleuths the device was unavailable "because New York is not ready for the iPhone." Speculation soon started running rampant that the carrier was pulling the plug as part of a solution to its ongoing data overload.

An official statement soon delivered by AT&T's PR team gave the following ever-helpful and oh-so-verbose clarification:

"We periodically modify our promotion and distribution channels."

Ah, so that's what was going on. Wait a minute -- what?

The AT&T iPhone-in-New-York Mystery

Fast-forward less than 24 hours to today, and boom: The iPhone in NYC is back online and in business. Going through AT&T's Web site as a new customer in New York presents no problems in ordering one of the temporarily elusive devices.

So what happened? Well, clearly, AT&T was modifying its promotion and distribution channels. Either that, or maybe this was part of the carrier's alleged efforts to win that "Worst Company Ever" award I hear it's gunning for.

Ah, but I jest; both of those explanations are equally silly. The actual truth is anyone's guess: a short-lived glitch in the system? A temporary supply drop at the online department's warehouse? An evil plot to join forces with the Grinch and ruin Christmas forever?

Fill in your own blank. As for an official update, AT&T's PR team was not immediately available to provide an answer.

But hey, cut 'em some slack. Modifying promotion and distribution channels all day would keep you pretty busy, too.

New York making news - New York City On Track To Another Homicide Low Point

New York

New York’s homicide total peaked at 2,245 in 1990 but never since reliable murder counts started in 1963 have there been as few as this year, says the New York Times. As of Sunday, there had been 461; the record low was in 2007, when there were 496.

The toll has gone down despite predictions that it would rise in a bad economy — a notion rejected by police commissioner Raymond Kelly. Challenges persist: With the city facing a $4.1 billion budget deficit, the police force — which has been reduced by 6,000 officers since 2001 — may have to shrink further.

New York marks fewest murders ever (duh)

New York

New York (CNN) -- Calling a sharp drop in overall violence throughout America's most populous city "one for the record books," New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced this week that 2009 saw historic crime-rate declines across the city's five boroughs.

The declines occurred in nearly every crime category, including the "lowest number of murders ever," Bloomberg said Monday.

According to the mayor's office, there have been 461 homicides to date on Monday in 2009. That number is down nearly 11 percent from the same time a year ago, with 516 murders recorded in 2008. Bloomberg said 2009 is on track to have the fewest murders in New York City's history since reliable recordkeeping began in 1963.

Bloomberg, with New York Police Commissioner Ray Kelly at his side, relayed the latest findings at the New York Police Department graduation ceremony for the city's 250 newest officers.

The mayor said the drop in New York's crime rate can be attributed to a combination of using new technologies and strong management, using statistics in police planning and responses, adequately funding the department and focusing resources to address problem areas.

Along with stringent gun laws, regulations and enforcement mechanisms, the combination of all these strategies "have helped to substantially reduce the level of violence on our streets," Bloomberg said.

Bloomberg and Kelly called special attention to "Operation Impact," the city's program aimed to address particularly dangerous locales.

Started in January 2003, the operation floods troubled areas, known as "Impact Zones," with teams of rookie and veteran police officers. The program has allowed the police department to mass resources to provide security for those living in high-risk locations, Kelly said.

"Police officers are saving lives in New York City every day, usually in the poorest neighborhoods," Kelly said.

New York City had not had a year with fewer than 600 recorded murders before 2002, but there have been eight consecutive years with fewer than 600 slayings, according to crime records. This year also saw the 19th straight year of overall decline of major felony crimes, authorities said.

The highest spike in New York City murders came in 1990, when 2,262 people were killed, according to the NYPD.

Since 2001, all major crime rates in New York have declined by 35 percent, according to the police department. Rape and robbery are down 38 percent and 34 percent, respectively. Murders and assaults have dipped by 29 percent, according to the department.

National violent crime trends also are on the decline, according to the FBI. The bureau released nationwide crime statistics in June for the first half of 2009, showing a nearly 4.5 percent drop in overall violence. Murder is down by 10 percent from a year ago across the United States, according to the FBI.

The new class of officers from Monday's graduation joins the largest police force in the world, one with about 38,000 uniformed personnel.

"The world will be watching them start their careers," Kelly said at Monday's graduation. "Their first assignment is on patrol at Times Square on New Year's Eve."

New York City is making waves: Crime plummets in Queens, city

New York City

When the final crime statistics come in next week, New York City is expected to see the fewest number of murders since the city began keeping statistics in 1963. Overall crime is down nearly 11 percent throughout the city with Queens crime seeing a 10 percent decrease compared to last year’s numbers.

“The numbers are staggering: since 2001, we’ve driven murder down by 29 percent, rape down by 38 percent, robbery down by 34 percent – the list goes on,” said Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who made the announcement during the Monday, December 28, NYPD graduation ceremony where 250 police officers were installed.

NYPD crime statistics through December 27 of this year showed that 461 murders took place in New York City compared to 516 that took place during the same period last year. This year is expected to mark the eighth year in a row where murders were under 600 – something that had not happened during a single year since the 1960s.

In Queens, overall crime in Patrol Borough Queens North and Patrol Borough Queens South dropped by nearly 10 percent – similar to the reductions throughout the city.

Patrol Borough Queens South saw a nearly 28 percent drop in murders through December 27 compared with this time last year. Patrol Borough Queens South was one of the few areas where the murder rate soared in 2008, causing local legislators and residents to express concern about the spike in violent crime.

“I’m in general grateful for all of the proactive efforts of Patrol Borough Queens South and their commanding officers for trying to reduce crime, increase contacts in the community and develop more links with the youngsters in the community,” said City Councilmember Leroy Comrie, who represents neighborhoods in southeast Queens.

Comrie specifically credited the work of Thomas V. Dale, the Commanding Officer of Patrol Borough Queens South, who Comrie said has done a great job with limited resources, a sentiment echoed by Queens Borough President Helen Marshall.

“While we would like to have more officers on the streets we are gratified that every Queens Precinct saw a crime decrease,” Marshall said in a statement. “The number of murders in Queens has decreased from 95 to 79 but any murder is one too many. We still need to get all illegal guns off our streets and that is a task that our communities must share with our Police Department.”

Meanwhile, leaders also said that the reduction in crime citywide this year was even more impressive considering the downturn in the economy, which has often yielded upticks in violent crime.

“The conventional wisdom is that when the economy suffers crime goes up, but we’ve never accepted that premise,” Bloomberg said. “Despite the downturn, New York City – already the safest big city in the nation – became even safer in 2009, and we’re committed to building on our progress in 2010.”

Gold rises as investors bet on $US drop (how will I go on)

New York

Gold rose in New York for the third straight session on speculation that the dollar will extend a slump, boosting demand for the metal as an alternative asset.

The dollar pared gains of as much as 0.4 per cent against the euro after declining 1.1 per cent in the previous three sessions. Gold has climbed 25 per cent in 2009, heading for the ninth straight annual gain, while the dollar slid 2.9 per cent.

"Gold’s moves will all be dollar-based now," said Frank McGhee, the head dealer at Integrated Brokerage Services LLC in Chicago. "Some pressure has come off the euro, and that’s allowed gold to come back."

Gold futures for February delivery rose $US3.10, or 0.3 per cent, to $US1107.90 an ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange. The price climbed 1.7 per cent in the previous two sessions.

Gains were limited as some investors booked profits after the most-active contract rose to a record $US1227.50 on December 3. Earlier, the price fell as much as 0.2 per cent.

"Some of the larger buyers have bailed on gold and, until the big money comes back on the buy side, gold is going to struggle," said Matt Zeman, a LaSalle Futures Group trader.

In London, gold for immediate delivery fell 65 US cents to $US1104.80 an ounce.

Among other precious metals traded in New York, platinum jumped to a three-week high as rising auto sales helped boost demand for the metal used in pollution-control devices in cars. Toyota Motor Corp., Japan’s largest automaker, led the first gain in domestic production in 14 months by the nation’s 12 vehicle producers as government incentives spurred demand.

Platinum futures for April delivery climbed $US15.70, or 1.1 per cent, to $US1489.70 an ounce on the Nymex. Earlier, the most-active contract reached $US1498.80, the highest price since December 3. March palladium, also used in car parts, fell 80 cents, or 0.2 per cent, to $US388.85 an ounce.

Silver futures for March delivery rose 12 US cents, or 0.7 per cent, to $US17.56 an ounce. The metal is up 55 per cent in 2009.

ABC News - Having Trouble Buying an iPhone in New York City?

New York

There have been reports that some New Yorkers have had trouble buying an iPhone through AT&T's Web site. If you've experienced difficulty purchasing an iPhone online or at a retail store, ABC News wants to hear from you.

Please share your story below and include your name, town and a daytime phone number. An ABCNews.com producer may contact you for more information or an excerpt of your message may be used in future news pieces.

Thank you!

AT&T has apparently found a workable solution to the reported data congestion in New York City. They've quietly stopped selling the iPhone to customers in the New York metropolitan area, at least from their web site.

I guess that's one way to solve the problem.

Reader Stephen in Brooklyn made the discovery while shopping for a new phone today.

"I was on the AT&T Wireless website trying to get an iPhone. However, when I put in my zip code 11231, the site says the iPhone is unavailable. This seemed a little odd so I started punching in other famous zip codes: 90210, 60609 (spiegel catalog), 02134 (zoom, an old children's show). For theses cities, LA, Chicago, Boston, iPhone is available. Then I looked up some other zip codes: Dallas, Miami, St. Louis, Philadelphia, San Francisco. All those cities are ok. Then I started putting in more NYC zip codes: midtown, Staten Island, the Bronx...no iPhone available.

This is weird...AT&T has cut off New York City.

"

I went to the AT&T site to verify what Stephen said. Sure enough, the iPhone was available to zip codes in San Francisco and other major cities. It was not available to purchase for people living anywhere in New York City, or any of the suburban zip codes in Westchester County or northern New Jersey that I tried. Was it a web site bug? I hopped online with a customer service chat rep to check.

"Daphne: Welcome to AT&T online Sales support. How may I assist you with placing your order today? Laura: Hi, I was looking at the iPhone 3Gs and the system tells me that I cannot order one in my ZIP code. My zip code is 11231. (Brooklyn, NY) Is this true? Are iPhones no longer available in New York City?

Daphne: I am happy to be helping you today . Yes, this is correct the phone is not offered to you because New York is not ready for the iPhone.

Daphne: You don't have enough towers to handle the phone.

Laura: Thank you for your help. So the phone is not available to people anywhere in the city?

Daphne: Yes this is correct Laura.

"

Update: In a written statement, AT&T spokesman Fletcher Cook told Consumerist that "We periodically modify our promotions and distribution channels." We have requested additional details, and will add them when and if they become available.

I was stunned to see this: New York City's crime rate drops 11% since last year, on target for record low

New York

Daily News Staff Report

Monday, December 28th 2009, 2:29 PM

Worms in the Big Apple

Do you consider New York a safe city?

The city's murder rate is on target to be at a record low - and the overall crime rate keeps plummeting, too, officials said Monday.

New figures show the murder rate and overall crime rate each dropped 11% from last year. The only major crime that went up was felony assault, which rose 2%.

Officials said there were 461 murders in the city thru Sunday, compared to 516 in the same period last year.

Mayor Bloomberg said the figures mark the 19th straight year in which major felony crime declined.

"The numbers are staggering," the mayor told the city's  new graduating class of police recruits.

"Since 2001, we've driven murder down by 29%, rape down by 38%, robbery down by 34% - the list goes on.

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said crime dropped in every borough and in nearly every category.

The projected homicide rate would be the lowest since comparable records were kept beginning in 1963.

Looking for a good restaurant on long island for valentines day. Must serve lobster tail, king crab legs and steak.

Yes, it's true: New York City crime rates at record low: police

New York

NEW YORK (Reuters) - This year has been the safest in New York City in more than four decades, with the murder rate down to levels not seen since the early 1960s, police said on Monday.

U.S.

As of Sunday, 461 murders had been committed, down from 516 in 2008 and the lowest number since comparable record-keeping began in 1963, the New York Police Department said.

Nationwide, statistics suggest the United States will have seen a drop in violent crime for a third year in a row. Last week, the FBI reported violent crime, including murder and robbery, dropped 4.4 percent in the first half of 2009.

The FBI also said New York was the safest U.S. big city in 2009.

Crime in New York has been falling for several years in a decline widely attributed to a "broken windows" strategy of no tolerance for even the smallest infraction and the system of identifying and addressing problem areas.

In announcing the 2009 statistics, Mayor Michael Bloomberg also gave credit to his efforts to clamp down on illegal guns.

This was "a year for the record books," Bloomberg said.

Rape, robbery and burglary rates were down from 2008 but felony assaults ticked up 2 percent, police said.

The announcement came as the police department inducted 250 new officers into the force, one of the smallest batches of new hires in recent memory, spokesman Paul Browne said.

The number of New York police officers is about 34,000, down from 40,800 in 2001, a span of time in which crime rates have fallen, police said.

It always seems to be something AT&T To New York: You Want The iPhone? You Can't HANDLE The iPhone!

NYC

Some interesting news this morning.  If you’re in the New York City metropolitan area and you’re looking to buy yourself an iPhone with your after-Christmas holiday cash, you’ll have to buy it at a brick and mortar location.  The AT&T website will not sell iPhones to citizens of the Big Apple.  New York has been hit with an iPhone ban.   The reason?  New York is not ready for the iPhone.

That’s not me saying that, that’s an AT&T customer service representative that The Consumerist contacted.  The iPhone has swamped AT&T’s cell network thanks to its popularity and its data-hungry apps, and that’s one of the reasons why the iPhone has been dropping calls left and right in major cities.  The easiest solution to solve the problem was to cut it off at the source.  In this case, the source is the iPhone itself.

Success of NYC Mayor Bloomberg's 2nd term questionable as he heads into next 4 ...

NYC

NEW YORK (AP) — Mayor Michael Bloomberg wraps up his second term this week, a sophomore effort that will be known for fewer splashy successes and more failures than his first four years as a politically untested businessman.

After the billionaire former CEO first entered office in 2002, he banned smoking in bars and restaurants, won control of the troubled city school system and reversed the post-9/11 fiscal slump. He was re-elected in 2005 by a landslide, even while running as a Republican in this Democratic town.

But Bloomberg's next four years were not as easy, and some New Yorkers became resentful of his missteps and priorities, including his presidential aspirations that smoldered for more than half his term before burning out in 2008.

On Friday, the 67-year-old mayor will be sworn in for another four years, and he will face a new class of Democratic leaders in citywide posts, which could make his next term even more difficult.

"The goodwill has, in many ways, evaporated," said Kenneth Sherrill, a political science professor at Hunter College. "If you make decisions, you make enemies, and after eight years of making decisions, there are a lot of disgruntled stakeholders."

To be fair, Bloomberg had plenty of second-term achievements.

He rezoned dozens of neighborhoods covering thousands of city blocks — a reinvention of the city not seen since the 1960s. He outlawed trans-fats in restaurant food and forced chain restaurants to post calorie counts on menus.

In schools, crime is down, the graduation rate slightly improved and students made some gains on state tests. Bloomberg also persuaded the state Legislature to give him control of the 1.1-million student school system rather than hand it back to a Board of Education model.

The decline in city crime that began in the 1990s continued, despite predictions of a recession-related surge. This year, the city is on track to have its fewest murders since comparable record-keeping began in the 1960s.

Bloomberg also managed to retain control of the office by first orchestrating a change to the two-term limit so that he could run again.

But the mayor has had many second-term setbacks.

The founder of financial information company Bloomberg LP garnered a whopping re-election victory. But shortly after his inauguration, the death of a 7-year-old girl brought close scrutiny of him and the child services agency.

Nixzmary Brown was tortured and beaten to death by her stepfather. Officials said she might not have died if the child welfare caseworkers involved in her case had acted more quickly in investigating suspected abuse when concerns were raised months earlier.

In winter 2006, the mayor vehemently denied an interest in running for president while his associates whispered otherwise. By spring, the mayor's operatives had begun to plant the seeds for a campaign.

He spoke out on national issues and found reasons to travel to presidential swing states. He changed his party registration from Republican to independent, while he had a team of people examine how he could get on the ballot as a third-party candidate.

"The fact that they were concentrating so much on this sideshow presidential campaign — it had to take away attention from day-to-day operations," said Doug Muzzio, public affairs professor at Baruch College.

By summer 2006, his reputation for handling crises smoothly during his first term — including a transit strike, a citywide blackout and the shooting of a councilman inside City Hall — risked being hurt by his response to a weeklong blackout in Queens.

Critics said the mayor should have come to the neighborhoods sooner than he did. But Bloomberg's aides said he was focused on preventing wider outages and had misinformation about the size of the blackout.

Throughout his second term, the mayor was embarrassed by problems among some city agencies.

In 2007, two firefighters died in a blaze at a condemned asbestos-filled building being dismantled at the World Trade Center site. It revealed the Fire Department was failing to inspect many construction sites and uncovered communications lapses between many agencies.

After two fatal crane accidents and several other construction deaths in 2008, Bloomberg admitted he was not satisfied with the agency, and his buildings commissioner resigned.

The mayor also had a number of policy disappointments.

While he set a goal of reducing the city's homeless population by two-thirds by 2009, the number of those in shelters reached an all-time high of more than 39,000, some 3,000 more than when he took office.

He failed to persuade the state Legislature to sign onto his plan to raise money for mass transit by making Manhattan's most congested streets essentially toll roads.

In addition, his administration gave up a plan to force the city's taxi fleet to go entirely hybrid by 2012, after taxi drivers and advocates sued in federal court.

The jet-setting mayor, who has homes in Colorado, Florida, Bermuda, London and upstate New York, has also had to contend with questions about how his own energy use isn't environmentally friendly.

He ordered his drivers to stop leaving the engines running in his SUVs after The Associated Press found them idling all over the city, sometimes for more than an hour.

Bloomberg insisted last week that he has learned from experience and that his second term was better than his first. He predicted his third term "will be even easier."

Percy Sutton, Attorney for Malcolm X, Dead at 89 (you don't read things like this all the time)

New York City

Percy Sutton, the pioneering civil rights attorney who represented Malcolm X before launching successful careers as a political power broker and media mogul, has died. He was 89.

Marissa Shorenstein, a spokeswoman for Gov. David Paterson, confirmed that Sutton died Saturday. She did not know the cause. His daughter, Cheryl Sutton, declined to comment when reached by phone at her New York City home on Saturday before midnight.

The son of a slave, Percy Sutton became a fixture on 125th Street in Harlem after moving to New York City following his service with the famed Tuskegee Airmen in World War II. His Harlem law office, founded in 1953, represented Malcolm X and the slain activist's family for decades.

The consummate politician, Sutton served in the New York State Assembly before taking over as Manhattan borough president in 1966, becoming the highest-ranking black elected official in the state.

Sutton also mounted unsuccessful campaigns for the U.S. Senate and mayor of New York, and served as political mentor for the Rev. Jesse Jackson's two presidential races.

"The godfather," Jackson once called him.

In a statement released Saturday night, Gov. David Paterson called Sutton a mentor and "one of New York's and this nation's most influential African-American leaders."

"Percy was fiercely loyal, compassionate and a truly kind soul," Paterson continued. "He will be missed but his legacy lives on through the next generations of African-Americans he inspired to pursue and fulfill their own dreams and ambitions."

In 1971, with his brother Oliver, Sutton purchased WLIB-AM, making it the first black-owned radio station in New York City. His Inner City Broadcasting Corp. eventually picked up WBLS-FM, which reigned for years as New York's top-rated radio station, before buying stations in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Detroit and San Antonio between 1978-85.

The Texas purchase marked a homecoming for the suave and sophisticated Sutton, born in San Antonio on Nov. 24, 1920, the youngest of 15 children.

Gas Drilling Plan Raises Water Contamination Fears in New York City

Environmentalists claim the drilling could contaminate New York's unfiltered drinking water sources with dangerous chemicals and radioactivity

Manhattan borough president Scott Stringer speaking at an anti-gas-drilling rally in New York

New York City leaders and environmentalists from around the state are fighting a plan to permit a new method of drilling for natural gas in the city's upstate watershed. They say the process, called horizontal hydraulic fracturing or hydro fracking, would contaminate New York's unfiltered drinking water sources with dangerous chemicals and radioactivity.

Drilling supporters reply that drilling can be done safely and that depressed rural areas need the money that gas drilling brings – and that the U.S.  needs the energy. The debate is a flashpoint in a modern gas rush sweeping New York and Pennsylvania that could transform formerly rural areas.

"We must kill this drill. Kill the drill!” Manhattan borough president Scott Stringer told supporters at a rally against New York State’s draft plan to permit horizontal hydro fracking of gas wells. The method blasts millions of gallons of water, sand and chemicals deep into the earth, first vertically, and then horizontally,to crack open an ancient gas-containing rock formation called the Marcellus Shale.

Most of southern New York and all of neighboring Pennsylvania lies above Marcellus rock, including the pristine Catskill Mountains, which supply New York City’s nine million residents with gravity-fed drinking water so pure that it isn’t even filtered.  Further south, the Delaware River Basin is the source of drinking water for millions more in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

Drilling opponents, who ranged from politicians to upstate environmentalists and landowners, vastly outnumbered supporters like Delaware River outfitter David Jones. Jones noted that gas burns more cleanly than other fossil fuels. "This is a good clean resource. It must be developed,” he said. “Let’s keep the dollars here in the U.S., reduce our dependence on foreign oil, keep our soils and water clean, and provide needed tax revenue and jobs.”

“We understand the environmental concerns, but that being said, we know without a doubt we can drill safely in any watershed,” said another defender, Scott Rotruck, vice-president of the Texas-based Chesapeake Energy Corporation, the largest company poised to expand gas drilling in New York State.

Nevertheless, Rotruck confirmed that following the public outcry, Chesapeake has decided not to seek to drill within New York City watershed. Other gas companies have made no such promise.  And Cathy Kenney of the New York State Petroleum Council, which represents the oil and gas industry, says that no ban within the watershed is needed. She disputes claims by some landowners in other states that their water wells were contaminated by toxic chemicals and migrating natural gas that caused explosions and tap water that can be ignited with a match.

"It could be coincidental. As of now, all of these state authorities are investigating this, as they should,” Kenney said in an interview. “But up till now there is no causal link between the hydro fracking that's going on and some of these claims."

However, Pennsylvania recently fined the Cabot Oil and Gas Corporation for drilling that contaminated the drinking water of at least 13 families, and for illegal discharges of toxic waste. Studies of gas drilling in western states have found similar problems, as well as air pollution with benzene, toluene, hexane and other carcinogens.

In New York State, where the bedrock is highly radioactive, scientists say hydro fracking will also return to the surface dangerously radioactive wastewater. Opponents like physician Vincent Pedre say a complete ban is necessary to protect human health.

"This stuff is toxic in our water supply,” he said. “It's toxic in the water supply for upstate New York. It should be banned throughout the entire state."

Alex Matthiessen is president of Riverkeeper, a private organization that works to protect fresh water sources. He notes that hydro fracking uses enormous quantities of fresh water – two to ten million gallons each time a gas-well is fracked – and says that local aquifers and lakes could be depleted.

"It seems unsustainable to think that we've got enough water to lubricate this process in a way that's not going to cause serious water deprivation for some of those communities,” he said. But he said Riverkeeper’s primary concern is contaminated wastewater created by hydro fracking: “How do you dispose of it, who oversees it, who oversees these contractors who are going to be trying to save a buck? This process will require more enforcement than any we’ve ever seen in New York State,” he said.

New York State currently has only 17 gas-well inspectors to monitor gas drilling, however. If state officials go ahead with hydro fracking permits next year, more than 40,000 new wells could be drilled in southern New York alone in the next few years.

Hold on to your hats Jon Gosselin: On Suicide Watch?!?

NYC

He's officially divorced.

He owes a lot in child support payments.

His most recent girlfriend wants nothing to do with him.

For all these reasons and more, Jon Gosselin is having a holiday season to forget. According to The National Enquirer, this is exactly what he may be trying to do... forever.

“Jon appears to be at the end of his rope. He feels that he has nothing left to live for,” a friend told the tabloid. “Jon feels betrayed by anyone he’s ever trusted. He’s drowning in a sea of debt, yet he blames everyone except himself for his problems."

That anger is allegedly directed at TLC, the network that made Gosselin all his money in the first place.

“Jon says TLC is still preventing him from pursuing other high-paying offers as a ‘vendetta’ for pulling the plug on Jon & Kate Plus 8. He claims they’re out to ruin him,” the insider said.

The unemployed douchebag owes $90,000 to Hailey Glassman, along with $13,000 per month in child support to Kate Gosselin. His anonymous pal says Jon may soon get evicted from his NYC apartment.

If that happens, it will at least give him more time to stalk Hailey and new boyfriend Damon Feldman. There's something to live for, Jon!

Xinhua: Gold ends higher as dollar drops

New York

CHICAGO, Dec. 23 (Xinhua) -- Gold futures on the COMEX Division of the New York Mercantile Exchange rose on Wednesday as disappointing home sales weighed on dollar. Silver and platinum both closed higher.

The most active gold contract for February delivery gained 7.30 U.S. dollars, or 0.7 percent, to finish at 1,094 dollars an ounce.

Dollar retreated from its 3-month high on Wednesday after a big rally, for the new home sales in November is weak although the existing home sales saw a strong increase Tuesday. The Commerce Department said that sales of new homes dropped 11 percent in November from the previous month, to the lowest level since April.

Meanwhile, another report released by the Commerce Department said the U.S. personal incomes and spending both rose in November. The incomes rose 0.4 percent and spending rose 0.5 percent, both below economists' expectations.

Shortly after the gold floor trading closed, the dollar index, a gauge measuring the greenback's value against six other major currencies, slipped 0.46 to 77.79, fueling gold's demand of hedge covering dollar's depreciation.

Crude oil, which rose more than 2 dollars a barrel for the most active February contract by the end of gold pit trading, also provided some spillover support to the precious metal.

March silver was up 16 cents to 17.19 dollars per ounce. April platinum gained 30 dollars to 1,432.90 dollars an ounce.

The outage was first reported at 8:45 a.m. EST and crews were working to resolve the power issue, according to Amtrak. The cause of the power disruption is under investigation. An Amtrak spokesman said trains were moving again as of 11:36 a.m., although he expected there was a lot of congestion.

New York City is still being talked about: Giuliani not running in NY Senate or gubernatorial race

New York City

NEW YORK — After months of playing it coy and flirting with a bid for statewide office, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani said Tuesday that he won't return to the campaign trail next year, leaving a wide-open field for New York Republicans interested in the gubernatorial and Senate races.

Giuliani, viewed by many New York Republicans as a savior for the struggling party, said his "significant commitments" to his lucrative law and consulting businesses made it impossible for him to run for office in 2010.

At a news conference to endorse ex-congressman Rick Lazio for governor, Giuliani said he had considered running against incumbent Democrat Gov. David Paterson and in the U.S. Senate race next year against freshman Democrat Kirsten Gillibrand.

Unwilling to bow to speculation that this might be the end of his political career, the 65-year-old said he wouldn't rule out running for office in the future. "It's a decision purely about 2010," he said. "I have no idea whether I'll run for something else."

GOP chairman collecting fees

Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele drew bipartisan criticism Tuesday after it was revealed that he is giving paid speeches, at up to $20,000 apiece, while still holding his full-time post as party head.

The former Maryland lieutenant governor, who was elected chairman in January, has given a dozen speeches to corporate boards and colleges while collecting a salary of $223,500 as party leader, the Washington Times reported Tuesday.

Former RNC Chairman Richard Bond said he was "shocked" by the news, while White House spokesman Robert Gibbs joked about it at Tuesday's briefing. Democrats said their current party chairman, Virginia Gov. Timothy Kaine, does not collect speaking fees.

Curt Anderson, a longtime adviser to Steele, said the party chairman has long worked as an "inspirational speaker" and continued after taking the RNC's helm.

Freshman Democratic U.S. Rep. Parker Griffith announced Tuesday he is switching to the GOP, another blow to Democrats facing a potentially tough midterm election. Democrats will hold 257 House seats to the GOP's 178 after Griffith's switch. The radiation oncologist, 67, was narrowly elected last year in a district that includes Huntsville and Decatur. President Obama lost badly there to Republican John McCain. Griffith had accumulated one of the most conservative voting records of any House Democrat. He was one of seven Democrats to oppose Obama's economic-stimulus measure early this year.

New York Medicaid program used $92 million for improper payments: audits - get ready to feel somber

New York

By Kenneth Lovett

Daily News Albany Bureau Chief

Tuesday, December 22nd 2009, 2:43 PM

ALBANY - New York's Medicaid program squandered $92 million in overpayments, billing errors and waste, three new audits found.

State Controller Thomas DiNapoli said Tuesday his office has stopped or recovered $20 million of the improper payments.

One of the new audits found the state Health Department made more than $53 million in improper payments for nearly 26,000 recipients who had multiple Medicaid identification numbers.

While the department acknowledged the improper payments, it is only seeking to recover $2.4 million of the $53 million, DiNapoli said.

"This is not the time to be wasting tens of millions of taxpayer dollars and doing nother to recover $50 million," DiNapoli said.

"Our audits keep finding that the safeguards designed to detect waste, raud, and abuse have failed over and over again."

DiNapoli called on the Department of Health to increase scrutiny of the program.

London Fletcher & Rock Cartwright on facing a familiar foe

By Russ Thaler

Chief Digital Correspondent

CSNwashington.com

The New York Giants that will travel to FedExField for a Monday Night tilt against the Washington Redskins hardly resemble the unit that beat the Burgundy and Gold 23-17 back in Week 1 of the 2009 NFL season. Back on September 13th, the Redskins needed a fake field goal to get in to the end zone, and only a garbage-time touchdown pass from Jason Campbell to Chris Cooley made the 23-17 New York victory look competitive in the box score.

In the subsequent weeks, the Giants have allowed opposing teams to score 30 points five times with the defense giving up 40 or more twice. This isnt exactly the Big Blue wrecking crew of Lawrence Taylor or that of Michael Strahan. Worse, after winning their first five games, the Giants have lost six of their last eight. They are one game behind Dallas for second place in the NFC East and also for the second and final Wild Card spot.

First year defensive coordinator Bill Sheridan is in jeopardy of losing his job if the Giants fail to reach the postseason. Injuries are to blame for at least some of their woes, specifically the season-ending variety suffered by the likes of Kenny Phillips, Jay Alford and Antonio Pierce. Plus, the continued hamstring issues that plague defensive back Aaron Ross. The third-year player is a natural cornerback, but switched to safety in an attempt to get back on the field in Week 11 and started there last week for the injured Michael Johnson. Ross is questionable for Monday nights game (again, with hamstring tightness), but has pledged to play, at cornerback, in place of Corey Webster who is doubtful with a sprained knee.

The Giants have been susceptible to the big play this season partly because of a decimated defensive backfield, but also due to the fact that they simply arent putting pressure on opposing quarterbacks like they expected to when the season began. The Giants had 20 sacks through the first nine weeks of the season--a respectable number that was good for 11th in the NFL at the time, but far below expectations for a unit that was once the most feared in the league. In their last five games, theyve registered just six sacks, and their total of 26 entering Week 15 ranks 22nd in the NFL. Defensive end Osi Umenyiora has become primarily a speed-rusher and was even demoted to the second team for a while in recent weeks.

Offensively, the Giants havent controlled the game on the ground as they have in years past, and that has been an issue. Lead running back Brandon Jacobs has yet to record a 100 yard game in 2009. Yet, they have compensated in the passing game with receivers Hakeem Nicks and Steve Smith combining to form a credible downfield threat.

Of course, quarterback Eli Manning, who has performed admirably despite a nagging foot injury, has to have time to throw. Much like their defensive line, the Giants offensive front was supposed to be a strength for this team, yet it has proven to be more of a liability. Monday night, rookie William Beatty will get the start in place of an injured Kareem McKenzie. McKenzie has a sprained ligament in his knee and Beatty, a natural left tackle, will be making just his second start on the right side of the offensive line.

Marvelous: Atlanta Falcons Derail New York Jets

New York

NFL News - December 20th, 2009 - Written by Bryan

At kick off the temperature was 29 degrees with a wind chill of 18, but that was not enough to phase the Atlanta Falcons. Matt Ryan's four-yard touchdown pass to tight end Tony Gonzalez on fourth down with 1:38 remaining propelled the Falcons over the New York Jets 10-7.

Despite being eliminated from playoff contention following Dallas' win over New Orleans Saturday night, the Falcons came out and played like the season was on the line. To them, there is still something to play for. Never in the history of the organization has the team had back-to-back winning seasons. At 6-7 entering the day, Atlanta must win the remaining games on their schedule. It started today with the Jets, in a game that featured only 17 total points. With the win, the Falcons are now 7-7 and in addition, likely ended the playoff hopes for the Jets.

Coming into the contest, the Falcons were a 5 1/2 point-underdog on the road in the NFL Betting Odds. The over/under was installed prior to kick off at 36 1/2, but with the game's total reaching only 17, it went the under.

Atlanta was glad to get their two offensive leaders back from injury. Ryan and running back Michael Turner had been sidelined the last few weeks with injuries, but were finally activated after an uneventful week of practice. Unfortunately for the Falcons, Turner once again went down with an injury in the game after only having one carry for seven yards. However, Ryan and the rest of the offense were able to compile enough points to defeat the Jets on the road.

Neither offenses could do much all game long until the game-winning drive by Atlanta. On the day, Ryan was held to only 152 yards passing on 16 of 34 attempts and one touchdown.

Atlanta relied on a tandem of running backs once Turner went out with an injury. Jason Snelling led the ground attack for the Falcons carrying the ball 16 times for 59 yards. Complimenting Snelling's power running game was Jerious Norwood, a speedy back who at any time can break for a big play. He had nine carries for 22 yards, but was used more effectively in the passing game. He accounted for two receptions for 47 yards, one of which went for 38.

It was the Atlanta defense however that kept the Falcons in the game, ultimately allowing them to win. They forced three turnovers that stalled Jets' drives. On the season the Falcons' defense has struggled winning the turnover battle, however, they were plus-three for the day.

New York quarterback Mark Sanchez accounted for all three turnovers, throwing three interceptions, and finished the day 18-for-32 for 226 yards one touchdown and the three interceptions.

With New England defeating Buffalo, the Jets have no chance of winning the AFC East. Mathematically, New York is still in playoff contention, but would need a lot to happen to reach post season play. This is made more difficult as the Jets play the only undefeated team in the NFL next week in the Indianapolis Colts.

The Falcons' 2009 playoff campaign has ended, but a chance at making history still has not. A win next week against Buffalo and the following week in the regular 2009 NFL season finale against Tampa Bay and the Falcons will secure the first back-to-back winning seasons in team history.

NYC is still newsworthy: NYC mayor: roads clear by evening, schools to open

NYC

(AP) — NEW YORK - Mayor Michael Bloomberg wants people to know that New York City is open for business despite the snowstorm.

Bloomberg said at a press conference Sunday that overnight the Sanitation Department had 2,400 people and 2,000 pieces of equipment clearing the snow. Bloomberg says main roads and highways are already fairly clear, and all streets should be cleared by the evening.

Bloomberg says schools will be open Monday, and this weekend city children will get a hand from the Parks Department, which will provide hot chocolate and sleds at some locations.

The mayor says city retailers weren't hard hit by the storm Saturday, because the snow held off until late in the day. He's encouraging residents and visitors to take advantage of possible cancelations by seeing a Broadway show.

USA Today - Thousands of flights canceled across East, DC airport halts flights amid heavy ...

New York City

Last update: 8:01 p.m. ET.

Commercial air traffic was halted at two Washington area airports on Saturday and more than a thousand flights had been canceled by noon ET as an intense December snow storm moved into the mid-Atlantic and the Northeast.

The Federal Aviation Administration said on its website flights were not likely to resume at either Washington National or Baltimore/Washington airports until Sunday morning, at the earliest. Flights were never officially halted at Washington's other airport -- Dulles -- very few flights actually operated there Saturday.

Elsewhere, even where flights were flying, service was spotty at a number of airports. Many airlines "proactively" canceled hundreds flights as the storm neared. United and Delta each had canceled more than the 500 flights each by noon ET, according to The Weather Channel. The Washington, Baltimore and Philadelphia airports were the hardest hit, as of 12:30 p.m. ET.

WHAT TO DO:Scroll to bottom of brief for links to airline change policies

"Delta reportedly canceled all flights in and out of Washington D.C., and American Airlines canceled its D.C., Baltimore and Philadelphia flights," according to MarketWatch.com.

One bright spot: The New York City airports -- Newark, New York JFK and New York LaGuardia -- did not see the worst of the wintry weather until Saturday evening, meaning the effect on the airports was relatively light. Conditions there remained relatively calm into Saturday night, likely sparing New York fliers any widespread problems until Sunday, when heavy snow is forecast for the area.

As for flight delays, many airports in the region showed only minimal delays, though that that's largely because so many flights were canceled and did not add to a potential weather backlog.

The biggest wave of cancellations appeared to come in Washington and Baltimore, where some of the storm's biggest accumulations were predicted.

In addition to American and Delta, AirTran and Virgin America were among the other carriers axing Saturday's entire flight schedule at the Washington and Baltimore airports.

United, the top carrier in the D.C. area, canceled nearly all of its flights that were scheduled to fly before 7 p.m. ET to or from the city's three airports: Washington Dulles, Washington National and Baltimore/Washington. Dulles is a major hub for United, meaning the cancellations would have a broad impact.

United also canceled flights in advance to and from Philadelphia, New York, and Newark.

As for affected customers, United spokesman Rahsaan Johnson tells Today in the Sky: "We have agents calling customers who gave us their phone numbers to confirm new reservations, but now is the time during which customers can get proactive. Ticketed customers should first visit united.com, where they can confirm the status of the flight on which they are ticketed, confirm that they have already been rebooked to the first available flight, or change their reservations.  Customers unable for whatever reason to accomplish what they need online should call United Reservations at 1-800-UNITED-1."

The Metro Washington Airports Authority echoed the bad news for fliers,  advising travelers via its website that "most of today's flights have been canceled by the airlines. Very few flights are currently scheduled to operate.  Please check directly with your airline's website to inquire about your flight before coming to the airport." The Authority operates both Dulles and National airports.

"It's going to be very challenging for people who weren't able to get out today to rebook on flights this week," Hamilton told The Associated Press.

The Baltimore Sun writes "more than 150 departing flights have been canceled (at BWI), according to FlightStats.com, most of those to destinations along the East Coast and in the Midwest. … Southwest Airlines, the leading carrier at BWI, canceled a majority of its flights to/from BWI up until 2 p.m., when they will reassess the weather."

TheNew York Times writes "earlier on Saturday morning at Reagan National, (airports spokeswoman Tara) Hamilton said, 'we've only had 14 operations in and out, and usually, we would have about 500 today.' At Dulles, she said, only 14 flights have come in and out (most international) on a day that there would normally be more than 700 flights."

Fridays worrying story: Bikers in the buff to protest demise of bike lane in NYC Orthodox Jewish ...

NYC

NEW YORK (AP) — Bicyclists who planned to go topless to protest the removal of a Brooklyn bike lane switched gears Saturday, pinning plastic breasts to their jackets as they rolled into a snowstorm.

Dozens of bikers joined a protest called the "Freedom Ride" to oppose the removal of a bike path in Williamsburg, an Orthodox Jewish neighborhood.

But the fierce snowstorm in New York kept them from pedaling topless as planned.

The hipster cyclists blame Mayor Michael Bloomberg for the loss of the lane because Williamsburg's Hasidic Jewish residents "can't handle scantily clad women" on wheels, said bike messenger Heather Loop, who organized the action.

The bikers' tactics did not amuse some faithful Hasids leaving synagogue services with their families on the Sabbath. They rushed home.

Bloomberg had removed the bike path because members of the Satmar branch of Judaism "don't want to see women in shorts," said Baruch Herzfeld, who runs a bike-sharing program in a community where Jewish women wear hefty skirts and long-sleeved blouses and men wear heavy coats and hats, even in summer.

"The rabbis want to keep their people in the 18th century, and they don't want the world to intrude into their enclave," Herzfeld said.

But Leo Moskowitz, a Williamsburg resident with five children, insists the main issue is safety.

"Kids can be knocked over because school buses are not allowed to stop in the bike lane — it's dangerous," said Moskowitz, who acknowledges he feels "very uncomfortable" seeing women bare their legs in public.

It was too cold to do that Saturday.

Still, the riders made their point, obeying traffic signals as police watched.

They had gathered earlier Saturday at a Williamsburg bar called the Wrecked Door.

Lyla Durden took a last puff from her cigarette on the street before rolling off into the flake-filled night with other protesters who believe the Bedford Avenue bike path should be restored.

Marc LaVorgna, a Bloomberg spokesman, said the city wants riders to use a much safer lane nearby — a two-way path separated from car traffic. That bike lane also drew the wrath of some Satmars last year, but it stayed.

The now-vanished bike lane on Bedford Avenue has been the subject of two recent protests, including one during which activists painted back the lane stripe. City workers quickly scraped it off.

Sam Paul uses her bicycle to deliver food and alcohol in Brooklyn for a service company called Snap.

The 23-year-old native New Yorker said it was snowy and cold, "but we're used to riding in this kind of weather."

Despite the hundreds of miles of bike lanes the city has created in recent years, "we need more," Paul said. Bedford Avenue "is congested — that's why a bike lane is necessary."

No word from City Hall whether the path will get a Second Chance, the name of a Williamsburg saloon where the group wound up on Saturday.

Rex Ryan has worked the Jets back into the division and wild-card races by playing stone-age football: Run the ball, play defense, throw only when it's an emergency.

Simply it should be this:

Don't Blow It, Kid.

Don't Do Anything Stupid.

Don't Throw Away The Season.

Sanchez has taken the Jets for such a wild ride through the first 13 games that Ryan probably needs motion sickness pills to keep his lunch down. But after giving him too much flexibility early in the season, Ryan has put the training wheels back on his bicycle and hopes the young man can steer it straight without flying over the handlebars, especially with thechance that it will be snowing during the game.

His job is pretty simple today in what could be messy conditions. The Jets don't need him to win the game; they just don't want him to lose it.

Ryan needs nothing fancy from Sanchez. The Jets have the NFL's No. 1 ranked defense and No. 1 running game. That is a formula that usually results in a record far better than 7-6, except when you have a rookie quarterback who leads the AFC with 17 INTs and sideline hotdogs consumed. It's a formula that should not fail in December, when cold weather is always a factor and now snow could be, too.

The Jets just need Sanchez to be the game manager Sunday. "This is huge, each week," Sanchez said.

Sanchez has a lot of growing up to do. He learned a painful lesson about listening to Ryan two weeks ago. Just 48 hours after Girardi taught him the finer points of the feet-first slide, Sanchez went flying head first for a first down in Toronto and landed hard on his right knee. He sprained his posterior cruciate ligament and was fortunate it only kept him out one game.

Maybe it's a good thing Sanchez now has a brace on his right knee to go along with the one he was already wearing on his left. It might make him less mobile and less inclined to take off like an 8-year-old chasing an ice cream truck.

This late in the year, Sanchez should have transitioned into a more prominent role in the offense. But everybody develops at their own pace. The experience he's gaining now will benefit the Jets next year. He has shown enough flashes in his 12 starts to see that he is going to be a very good player.

NYC is the focus - Storm to dump up to aa foot of snow on NYC area

NYC

New Yorkers better stock up on groceries, winter gear and last-minute gifts -- a massive winter storm is set to bear down on the city tomorrow, dumping nearly a foot of snow in some areas.

The snow and high winds are expected to start coming down in the late afternoon Saturday and continue through the night caused by an intense pocket of low pressure hovering over the Atlantic Ocean.

"The intense low will produce a swath of heavy snowfall. As well, as a corridor of high winds," the National Weather Service warned.

Temperatures will dip to 24 degrees at night but coupled with strong winds, it will feel like a frigid 10 degrees.

Coastal areas, especially Long Island, will be in the direct line of the massive storm.

"The greatest potential for heavy snow and gusty winds will be along the coast and in the New York City metropolitan area," the National Weather Service warned.

The National Weather Service warned that significant snow, sleet and ice were expected and those traveling should exercise precautions.

A blizzard watch has been issued for Long Island. Along with the snow, wind speeds could reach up to 50 miles per hour.

A winter storm watch has been issued for New York City, the surrounding metro area. Those locations could see up to eight inches of snow.

A winter storm warning is posted for Hunterdon, Middlesex, Monmouth, Morris, Somerset, Sussex and Warren counties in New Jersey.

The watches are in effect from Saturday morning to Sunday morning.

New York City is getting some press - Snowstorm Hits New York City: How Do Residents Cope?

New York City

The Big Apple is Getting Hit with a Major Storm, What's it like to Live Through a Mini-blizzard in the Capital of the World?New York City is getting its first winter storm of the year as forecasts predict seven to ten inches of snow will hit the metropolitan area. In addition, wind speeds are expected to hit 30 miles per hour. While this is not quite a blizzard, it certainly is a major winter storm in the weekend before Christmas.

People who do not live in the middle of New York City often ask me how difficult it must be to deal with a snowstorm in a place as crowded and fast paced as Manhattan. Actually, the number of people and fast pace of life very much helps us manage through the snow.

As a ten year resident of the Murray Hill section of Manhattan, I've live through plenty of snowstorms in the city. The thing that strikes me most is how efficiently the city, (and by 'city' I mean the combination of city snow removal service and the local residents and shopkeepers) recovers from major storms.

There is, of course, a natural built in advantage to densely populated areas when it comes to snow cleanup and removal. As most people in Manhattan, and particularly in Murray Hill, live in multi-family dwellings ranging from townhouses to high rises, on a per person basis there is actually very little to clean up.

Nonetheless the preparation and processes involved in advance of the storm itself are truly remarkable. Like clockwork, it seems, hours before the storm city buses have been equipped with chains on their tires, snow plow trucks sit at strategic locations in each neighborhood waiting for the first flakes, and building superintendents and residents have their salt and shovels propped up in front of seemingly every front door in the neighborhood. They are aided, of course, by the fact that we live in a concrete jungle and subways run underneath the streets and that heat tapping pavement is ubiquitous.

What is your favorite restaurant in New York state and why is it so damn good?

Anything from fast food up to the finest dining places! What did you order the last time you were there and how was it? Was it prepared right, was it served hot? Were you happy with your seating choices? Did you like the menu selections? Is this where you would normally choose to eat at more often than not?

Once-stout defense lets Giants down

New York

By David Elfin

The New York Giants sacked Tom Brady five times to stun the perfect New England Patriots and win Super Bowl XLII two seasons ago. Last year, that fierce defense was even better as New York finished with the NFC's best record. As the Giants started 5-0 this year, the defense allowed just 64 points.

That all seems like ancient history.

The Giants (7-6) enter Monday night's game against the Washington Redskins having lost six of eight while surrendering an average of 32.4 points.

Last week, in a critical NFC East home game against Philadelphia, Eli Manning passed for a career-high 391 yards and three touchdowns as the offense produced a season-high 512 yards. But the Giants still lost 45-38, albeit with the special teams and the offense allowing a touchdown apiece.

"You shouldn't lose games when your offense scores 38 points," defensive end Justin Tuck said. "It's disheartening. I don't know what we've got to do to change this around, but we just aren't playing good defensively right now."

Added fellow end Mathias Kiwanuka: "This game falls squarely on our shoulders. We failed big time."

Only four teams - Kansas City, Detroit, St. Louis and Tampa Bay - are giving up more points.

The Giants built their 5-0 record largely against bad teams - the Chiefs, Buccaneers, Redskins and Oakland, who own a combined 12-40 record. Giants coach Tom Coughlin said he isn't sure his team was worthy of the hype it received.

"I didn't know if we had really been tested to the extent that was going to come," Coughlin said of the just-completed eight-game stretch in which the Giants played seven teams that now have winning records.

The most baffling aspect of the defense's demise has been the pass rush. It once was the pride of the Giants, racking up 52 sacks in 2007 and 42 last season even without Michael Strahan and Osi Umenyiora. This season has been a far different story: The Giants have 26 sacks even though Umenyiora and Tuck have played every game.

What are some nice restaurants in New York City and Stony Brook area?

Hey guys! So I'll be staying in Stony Brook area for couple weeks with my mom. And I'm planning on going out to NYC. So I was wondering what are some good restaurants near the MET for snack(cupcakes?), lunch, dinner and dessert or great restaurants in the city in general. (But not too pricey) Also if you know, any decent place around Stony Brook or Port Jefferson area. I've been researching online. But I want to hear from locals or who've been there. Thanks! :)

Fridays new development: NBA: New York 95, LA Clippers 91

New York

NEW YORK, Dec. 19 (UPI) -- David Lee put New York in front with 26 seconds left Friday and Chris Duhon added three free throws in pushing the Knicks past the Los Angeles Clippers 95-91.

New York fell behind by 15 points after one period, but got back in the contest with a big third quarter and made the key plays down the stretch to end a two-game skid.

Baron Davis gave the Clippers their last lead at 91-90 by hitting a 3-pointer with 39 seconds to play. Lee then tipped in an offensive rebound after a miss by Al Harrington, putting the Knicks back in front.

Al Thornton committed an offensive foul for the Clippers and Duhon made 1-of-2 free throws.

Rasual Butler tried to win it for the Clippers with a 3-pointer, but he missed it with 2 seconds to go and Duhon tacked on two more foul shots with a second remaining.

Lee led the way with 25 points and Duhon had 17 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds.

Los Angeles got 20 points from Chris Kaman and 19 from Davis. The Clippers had won their previous two games.

New York rallied in the third period with a 14-4 run. The Knicks outscored the Clippers by 16 in the third to tie the score heading into the final quarter.

Crude prices rise on Iran-Iraq tension

New York

NEW YORK, Dec. 18 (Xinhua) -- Crude prices rose on Friday after reports said two major oil producers -- Iran and Iraq -- are in tension.

Iraq's Deputy Foreign Minister Mohammed Haj Mahmoud said Iranian soldiers surrounded a well in the al-Fakkah oil field, one of the largest oil fields in the country.

Although some reports said the Iranians have left the region but the issue brought nervousness in the market.

Colder than normal weather in the U.S. Northeast, the biggest heating oil market in the world, also helped support prices.

Light, sweet crude for February delivery was up 34 cents to 74.42 U.S. dollars a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

NY unemployment rate drops to 8.4 percent for November Reading this made me feel hostile

New York

New York's unemployment rate dropped for November to 8.4 percent, the state Labor Department reported Thursday.

The jobless rate also fell in Chemung and Steuben counties from October to November but grew in Schuyler County.

Chemung County gained 200 jobs in November in trade, transportation and utilities, according to the Labor Department.

Chemung County's unemployment rate in November was 8.5 percent, compared to the 8.7 percent in October. In November 2008, the county's unemployment rate was 6.4 percent.

Schuyler County reported a jobless rate for November of 8.1 percent, compared to the October rate of 7.6 percent and the November 2008 rate of 6.5 percent. Jobs were lost in the service, leisure and hospitality sectors.

In Steuben County, November's unemployment rate fell to 9.4 percent from 9.6 percent in October. The jobless rate was 6.9 percent in November 2008.

Jobs were reported lost in a variety of areas from mining and construction to manufacturing and leisure and hospitality.

In Tioga County, N.Y., unemployment was at 8.4 percent in November, up from 8.0 percent in October. Tompkins County's November jobless rate was at 5.3 percent -- the lowest in the state.

It's a tragedy: Yankees welcome Granderson and say more moves likely

New York

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Curtis Granderson donned the pinstripes as the newest member of the New York Yankees on Thursday and the owner said the World Series champions had not yet finished constructing the 2010 team.

Sports

Center-fielder Granderson, obtained by New York from the Detroit Tigers in a three-team trade, posed in his new uniform No. 14 at a Yankee Stadium news conference with team mates CC Sabathia and Alex Rodriguez standing by to welcome him.

"One thing I've learned over my world travels, being in China, being in Africa, being in Europe, Latin America, when you mention Major League Baseball...the Yankees are the first team that comes up," said Granderson.

"To get a chance to be a part of that now...I'm excited about that."

Left-handed hitting Granderson, who smacked 30 homers and drove in 71 runs for Detroit last season, is not sure where he will hit in the New York lineup.

He batted just .249 in 2009 and struggled against left-handed pitching.

Where Granderson is used in the order will probably be determined by moves made during the rest of the off-season.

"I don't believe we're done yet," Yankees managing general partner Hal Steinbrenner told reporters. "We always worry about pitching and we did lose (Hideki) Matsui.

Matsui, New York's designated hitter last season and MVP of the Yanks' Fall Classic triumph over the Philadelphia Phillies, signed with the Los Angeles Angels as a free agent.

"Granderson is going to go a long way toward replacing the offense there but I still think we're looking possibly at another bat," Steinbrenner said.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi said Granderson was a good fit.

"We're very excited about what Curtis brings to our club. Athleticism is something I love," Girardi said about the fast, lanky outfielder. "He hit 30 homers last year and I think he'll fit very well in our lineup and at Yankee Stadium.

Left-hander Sabathia said Granderson's problems against southpaws, against whom he hit just .183 last season, might just be a matter of approach.

"When he came up he was driving the ball to left field and was tougher on lefties then," Sabathia said.

"He started to hit a couple of home runs, got a little pull happy and lefties were able to stay away from him (pitch him outside) and have some success against him."

Yankee officials said they were still interested in retaining free agent Johnny Damon at the right price, and Steinbrenner noted the improvement of arch-rival Boston, who recently signed free agent pitcher John Lackey.

"It's concerning," the Yankees owner said. "They are going to have a great pitching staff. But I think we have a great pitching staff, too. Is there room for improvement? Yes."

Shocking New York rumors: New York Yankees finalize one-year deal with Nick Johnson to replace Johnny Damon

Damon's Farewell

Are you happy that Nick Johnson is returning to the Yankees?

The Yankees finalized a one-year deal, $5.5 million deal with first baseman/DH Nick Johnson Friday, effectively ending Johnny Damon's tenure in pinstripes.

The deal will not be officially announced until sometime next week after Johnson completes a physical.

According to baseball sources, the 31-year old Johnson had more lucrative offers from a couple of other teams but wanted to return to the Yankees for whom he began his career in 2001.

He was one of many options GM Brian Cashman spelled out to the Yankee high command in organization meetings two weeks ago in the event Damon stuck to his demands of a three-year contract at the same $13 million he earned last year. In the end, Damon, according to sources, came down to two years, but still at $13 million per season and by then the Yankees were too far down the road with Johnson.

The signing of the lefty-hitting Johnson, who had a .426 on-base percentage to Damon's .365, solidifies the No. 2 hole in the Yankee lineup, albeit minus the speed Damon provided. It also ends the Yankees' interest in ex-Bergen Catholic product Mark DeRosa, another option Cashman had offered for consideration.

It would appear the Yankee payroll is going to come in at under $200 million for the first time since 2007, although Cashman said Friday he's still on the hunt for more pitching. As of now, the plan is for Phil Hughes, Joba Chamberlain, Alfredo Aceves and Sergio Mitre to compete for the fourth and fifth spots in the starting rotation, in which case there may well be a need for another righthanded set-up reliever.

"Right now, there's nothing on the front burner," Cashman said, "but if I can do something between now and Christmas I'm certainly going to try."

Dark New York post - New York's Unemployment Rate Falls

New York

New York state’s seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate fell in November, according to new figured released this afternoon by the Department of Labor.

The jobless rate fell from 9.0 percent to 8.6 percent last month.

Moreover, the number of unemployment residents declined from 871,000 to 833,000.

In New York City, the number of unemployed moved from 413,000 in October to 397,000 in November – bringing the number of unemployed in the city down .3 percent to 10 percent.

The city saw 41,000 new jobs in the education and health sectors, with the biggest losses in trade and utilities.

The figures are still much higher than this time last year, when the state jobless rate in November was 6.3 percent and the city jobless rate was 6.7 percent.

The nation’s unemployment rate also saw a slight drop. It was 10 percent in November, down from 10.2 percent in October.

Experts say while the numbers are encouraging, it’s too early to establish a trend.

Unemployment Rate Drops in City

New York City

NEW YORK, NY December 17, 2009 —The city's unemployment rate has fallen to 10 percent, matching the national unemployment rate. That's according to new state labor department figures, which show the state's jobless rate improving from 9 percent in October, to 8.6 percent last month.

Bruce Herman, deputy commissioner of the state's labor department, says even though the latest numbers are encouraging, there's not enough data to suggest an economic recovery. "What we're concerned about is the magnitude of job loss over the past year, that has put the state and New York City in a pretty deep hole, and what can be done to assist the hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers that are still unemployed," Herman says.

In November, city jobs were lost in the areas of construction, publishing, and in museums. On the other hand, jobs were added in the city's education, accounting, and retail sectors.

The state fared better than the city from October to November, but the unemployment rate dropped from 9 to 8.6 percent.

The financial-services industry has shed the greatest number of jobs this year.

Unemployment Rate Drops to 10 Percent in New York City

New York City

MANHATTAN — Even as economists and government officials are saying that the recession appears to be ending, 10 percent of New Yorkers are still out of work.

That's one in 10 city residents who are without a job, compared to an average unemployment rate of 7.6 percent throughout the rest of the state.

State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli issued a report on Wednesday stating that the city's budget gap for 2010 will not be as wide as feared, but more jobs may still be lost.

“The impact of the recession on the city’s revenue has not been as severe as earlier forecasts indicated,” DiNapoli said. “But the City may still end up losing more than 200,000 jobs."

The comptroller went on to say that while New York City had done a good job with its finances, the State's budget crisis could continue to trickle down to the city.

Since November 2008, over 95,000 non-farm jobs have been lost in New York City.

New York Daily News: New York Knicks shoot 47 three-pointers, fall to Chicago Bulls, 98-89

New York

BY Frank Isola

DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER

CHICAGO - Mike D'Antoni's free-flowing offense went haywire last night as the Knicks set franchise records for most three-pointers attempted and worst shot selection.

Yes, you simply can't have one without the other. The Knicks, 98-89 losers to the Bulls, took an astonishing 47 threes, two shy of the NBA record. They took just 39 shots inside the arc and lived by the philosophy that even if you keep missing - and they certainly bricked plenty - by all means keep firing away.

"Yes, that is a lot for us," D'Antoni said after the Knicks fell to 8-17 entering tonight's home game against the Clippers. "In the first half, we took 29. It just happens sometimes that way. Some were good and some were just jacked up. They went in early for us and that's how we got into taking them."

It was the extreme case of fool's gold. The Knicks hit seven of their first 12 threes en route to building a 33-16 lead only to misfire on 26 of their last 35.

"That's our game," said Chris Duhon, who shot 5-for-10 from behind the arc. "We're not going to go away from our game. We're going to keep shooting."

Al Harrington made four of 13 three-point tries, Wilson Chandler was 1-for-6 and Danilo Gallinari was 6-for-15, including a late three that sailed behind the backboard. All three scored a team-high 18points for the Knicks.

Gallinari believed he was fouled on that three-point try that got away, and instead was taunted by Bulls forward Tyrus Thomas, who is out with a broken arm.

"That's part of the game," Gallinari said of Thomas screaming at him.

The loss was the Knicks' second straight and leaves D'Antoni open to questioning as to why he didn't play Nate Robinson, who was benched for a seventh straight game. One game after scoring 13 fourth-quarter points against Charlotte, the Knicks put up 17 in the final period last night. They went nearly eight minutes without as field goal as Chicago, trailing 79-75 with seven minutes to play, took control of the game with a 10-0 run. John Salmons scored nine of his 20 points in the fourth.

D'Antoni essentially used just six players. Eddy Curry had a disastrous three-minute-and-32-second, first-half cameo during which the Knicks' 17-point lead got cut to four.

"We obviously weren't clicking when I went in the game," said Curry, who was 0-for-2.

With Larry Hughes sidelined with a strained groin, Toney Douglas moved into the rotation but played only four minutes. Duhon went for 44 minutes and for the second straight game had little in the tank with the game on the line. If Robinson couldn't get a run with his team struggling, when will he play?

Asked if watching last night's loss was difficult considering that Duhon and Douglas were struggling, Robinson said, "No, it's all the same."
