NYC is the focus - Storm to dump up to aa foot of snow on NYC area

NYC

New Yorkers better stock up on groceries, winter gear and last-minute gifts -- a massive winter storm is set to bear down on the city tomorrow, dumping nearly a foot of snow in some areas.

The snow and high winds are expected to start coming down in the late afternoon Saturday and continue through the night caused by an intense pocket of low pressure hovering over the Atlantic Ocean.

"The intense low will produce a swath of heavy snowfall. As well, as a corridor of high winds," the National Weather Service warned.

Temperatures will dip to 24 degrees at night but coupled with strong winds, it will feel like a frigid 10 degrees.

Coastal areas, especially Long Island, will be in the direct line of the massive storm.

"The greatest potential for heavy snow and gusty winds will be along the coast and in the New York City metropolitan area," the National Weather Service warned.

The National Weather Service warned that significant snow, sleet and ice were expected and those traveling should exercise precautions.

A blizzard watch has been issued for Long Island. Along with the snow, wind speeds could reach up to 50 miles per hour.

A winter storm watch has been issued for New York City, the surrounding metro area. Those locations could see up to eight inches of snow.

A winter storm warning is posted for Hunterdon, Middlesex, Monmouth, Morris, Somerset, Sussex and Warren counties in New Jersey.

The watches are in effect from Saturday morning to Sunday morning.
