NYC is still newsworthy: NYC mayor: roads clear by evening, schools to open

NYC

(AP) — NEW YORK - Mayor Michael Bloomberg wants people to know that New York City is open for business despite the snowstorm.

Bloomberg said at a press conference Sunday that overnight the Sanitation Department had 2,400 people and 2,000 pieces of equipment clearing the snow. Bloomberg says main roads and highways are already fairly clear, and all streets should be cleared by the evening.

Bloomberg says schools will be open Monday, and this weekend city children will get a hand from the Parks Department, which will provide hot chocolate and sleds at some locations.

The mayor says city retailers weren't hard hit by the storm Saturday, because the snow held off until late in the day. He's encouraging residents and visitors to take advantage of possible cancelations by seeing a Broadway show.
